Some faithful packs take a few creative freedoms, but Faithful 32x32 stays as close to the original as possible. This specific pack stays truest to the original. Their main purpose is to turn the default Minecraft textures (16x16) into HD textures (32x32, 64圆4, etc.). You can see it on the page I linked (second place, wooo!).There are many "faithful" texture packs for Minecraft out there.
Shameless plug: I'm the maker of Pixel Reality, a realistic resource pack at default resolution that is a great alternative if your machine isn't powerful, because it has nice lighting effects, sky, clouds, sun etc.
I have no idea if Optifine and Forge work together, though. You don't need mods to use resource packs, but some effects are only made possible by Optifine, especially the most realistic features, so I strongly suggest you install it (it comes with an auto-installer, very easy). If you want to get the most out of those packs you need a mod: Optifine. You can browse for realistic resource packs here. The other way to make Minecraft look more realistic is by using a resource pack. Install a shader mod, download the wanted shader and follow instructions. The most dramatic changes to the way the game looks comes from shaders, but only machines with a good enough video card can run them properly. You "install" it by loggin in your account and going into your profile's options. It's a simple texture file, you can either draw one by yourself or download it from some website. Shader: a collection of graphical effect that don't change the textures but the way they look for example, a shader that makes the sunlight very bright and makes blocks project real shadows. Pick one for the version of the game you're using (the latest is 1.8.1) and the resolution you like the most (and your machine can run) higher resolution is not necessarily better because you lose that "Minecraft feel" and the low polygon count becomes super-evident, it also takes more resources to run. RPs are usually identified by resolution (for example, 16x, the default resolution Minecraft uses, or 64x, an HD resolution) and game version (for example, 1.8 or 1.7.10). zip into your /resourcepacks folder (if you don't know what it is, start the game and go to Options->Resource Packs->Open resource pack folder). A resource pack can't really add new graphical effect but only change what's already in the game for example, a pack making the default textures look hi-res. Texture pack (or Resource pack): a collection of graphics and/or sounds that change how the game looks and feel. Most mods run on Forge, a 3d party API you have to install (there's an auto-installer): Mod: piece of code that adds new features to the game and/or changes features already in the game for example, a mod that only leaves zombies in the world.
